| What is Zumba? Zumba is a fitness class that combines dance and fitness moves to the background of Latin music as well as to a variety of other world rhythms. The experience is more like attending a party rather than an exercise class! It is an awesome cardio workout and provides toning benefits as well. What do I wear to Zumba, what shoes do I wear, and what should I bring? You can wear sweat pants, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, anything comfortable and cool. Wear a cross-trainer or dance-fitness shoe. Also, bring a bottle of water and perhaps a towel. When do the classes start? Zumba classes are ongoing, meaning there is no starting or ending dates. Anybody can jump in at any class and start brand new. New people start every week. The class is one hour long (or short, depending on how you see it!) What can I expect when I come to Zumba? The Zumba instructor will lead the class in easy, simple movements that are combinations of dance and fitness and the students follow along. The instructor teaches visually, meaning there is no talking. This is so you can "feel the music." The music is fun and invigorating and is mostly latin: salsa, merengue, cha-cha, bachata, tango, cumbia, reggaeton, samba, calypso, belly dance, swing, country, hip-hop, and alot of hip and booty shaking! Fitness moves such as lunges, bicep curls and other arm-toning isolations, and crunches (while standing) are incorporated. The class structure starts with a warmup and proceeds to intervals of faster and slower tempos throughout the hour, ending with a cool-down and stretch. Also, expect to smile, laugh, sweat, meet great people, and hear occasional screams of joy! What if I'm not coordinated and I can't dance! Don't get frustrated! Zumba uses alot of repetition of steps from class to class. Be patient and try it out a few times. After a few classes you will know the basic steps to salsa, merengue, cha-cha and all the rest. Most of all just have fun! Zumba is an exercise party! There is no right or wrong way to Zumba. Even if you can't do a step just move to however the music makes you feel! What if I'm out of shape and I can't keep up? Many students start out at lower fitness levels either due to injury or lack of exercise. They work at their own pace and can modify their own intensity of exercise. Most of the moves are low impact and the ones that aren't can be modified. Some students will sit out songs to rest. That's perfectly fine! There is no competition going on here! As you continue you will see your stamina build up and you will be able to do more and more. What kind of people are in your Zumba classes? People of all fitness abilities, ages, sizes and nationalities take Zumba classes. Both women and men take zumba but usually there are more women. Young children may take the class if they are accompanied by their parent. How will Zumba benefit me? So many ways! There are many testimonials to the benefits of Zumba. Zumba is a total package: mind, body and spirit! Physically, you will burn 500-800 calories in one-hour, build cardio strength and tone muscles. Zumba fitness especially targets the core, building strong abdominal muscles. Mentally, you will relieve stress, stimulate your brain by learning coordination and new steps, and feel more confident moving your body. Spiritually you will feel joy, forget your worries, gain self-confidence and self-esteem. Not to mention you will make new friends and you will learn how to dance! Students tell me all the time that they wait all week just to come to Zumba. You'll find that after one class you can't wait to come back again, too! |
