Practice Yoga at Home
The most important tool for practicing yoga is the yoga mat. Buy the right yoga mat
for you. You can buy mats that are extra long if you are tall, or extra thick if you
have tender knees.
Another good tool is a yoga belt or tie. A yoga tie or belt will help you go further into
your stretch. Place the tie around your foot when stretching an extended leg. Or
hold the tie between your hands to get a full range of motion in an arm stretch
behind the back.
A yoga block is useful for those people who lack flexibility in poses where you would
put your hand on the floor, such as triangle pose or side lunges. You can get
different types of blocks. Generally the foam 4 inch blocks are best, and they are
lightweight.
A blanket or pillow can be used to sit on during sitting poses. This helps people with
tight hips. Sit on the edge of the pillow or blanket and let your hips fall forward. You
can also use them to help cushion or prop up any body part that needs help in a
yoga pose.
Foam yoga wedges and pillow bolsters are also good props. The wedges add
cushion so that you can place them under your knees when kneeling. The bolsters
are great for placing under your knees when lying on the back. This takes strain off
of the lower back.
Eye pillows are nice to use during savasana which is the meditation/relaxation part
of the yoga class where you lie on your back with eyes closed. They will help you
relax and shut out the world. You can get them scented and you can use them to
help you fall asleep at night!
Gripitz Blocks will help reduce wrist strain when doing yoga poses that place weight
on your hands. They look like dumbbells but they are made of foam. These are
great to help those people who have a hard time bearing weight on the wrists.
t's nice to practice to the background of relaxing music. You can find alot of CD's
under the topic of "music for yoga". You can find music on iTunes, amazon.com or
at your local Borders book store under the New Age category.
Instructional DVD's come in all levels and styles. Choose the one that is right for
you. For example, you can find yoga instructional DVD's that focus on prenatal,
back care, beginners, or advanced. Read the reviews on amazon.com to help you
choose the right one! With an instructional DVD or CD you can practice yoga in the
privacy of your home and on your own schedule.
