Choosing a Running Shoe

Choosing a Running Shoe
By Jeff M Ray

People take up the sport of running because they want to get fit. This is a great decision that helps them to stay healthy and strong. However, running involves more than just getting on your feet and moving those legs for several miles around the neighborhood or in the park. While it may be alright for most to wear comfortable shirts or jogging pants and not care about fashion, choosing a running shoe that will help you get fit is an essential task that you should not take lightly.

If you are seriously considering running as the way to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you cannot just go into a shoe store and buy the first pair that takes your fancy. You need to determine first the type of feet you have. You can do this by doing the wet foot test. You need to wet the bottom of your feet and stand at ease on a piece of paper. Step off after a minute and examine the impression your feet have left on the paper.

Experts have determined that most people fall under one of three types of foot, namely: high arch, normal arch and flat foot. Those with high arch (underpronator) have footprints showing the ball and heel joined by a thin band along the outside border. In other cases, no band is visible at all. This type of foot has poor shock absorbing properties so cushioning shoes are recommended. These types of shoes allows flexibility and maximum movement for your feet.

People with normal arch will show a wide band connecting the ball and heel. They should get running shoes that provide normal stability and cushioning. These shoes are usually are semi-curved in shape.

Flat-footed individuals (overpronators) will have impressions that show the entire outline of their feet. The recommended type of shoes for them is motion-control shoes that keep the feet stable. These shoes provide maximum feet support.
